Cho Hye-Chung

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the longitudinal effects of the drinking of middle-aged men on the drinking of each spouse. For the analysis, the data were extracted from the 4 years¡¯ database of Korea Welfare Panel Study(5-8 wave), and data were analyzed by latent growth curve model(LGM). The result of the analysis showed the model manifested linearly decreasing trend of drinking of both the middle-aged men and their spouses for 4 years. Second, the higher initial levels of drinking of middle-aged men appeared to be corresponding to the higher initial levels of drinking of their spouses, and likewise, the lower speed of the reduction of drinking of middle-aged men also appeared to be corresponding to the lower speed of the reduction of drinking of their spouses. Therefore, the drinking of middle-aged men appeared that it has the longitudinal effects on the drinking of spouses. Third, the initial levels of drinking appeared higher at the lower age group of female spouse, and the level of income and education of female spouses appeared to have insignificant effects on the drinking trajectory of female spouses. Based on these findings, the study discussed the importance of preventive approach to the drinking problem of middle-aged men and their spouses.
